Rillwork: Terms of Use
DRAFT — not legal advice. Written in plain English for the free beta. A qualified lawyer should review it before it is published or relied on.
Last updated: 24 October 2026
1. Who we are
"Rillwork" is offered by Jake Cadwell, postal address to be added (PO box being set up) ("we", "us"). Contact: hello@rillwork.com.
These terms cover:
- the Rillwork website at https://rillwork.com;
- the Rillwork app at https://rillwork.com/app/;
- the beta sign-up form at https://rillwork.com/#signup.
Together these are "the Service". By using the Service, you agree to these terms. If you use it for an employer or client, you confirm that you may accept these terms for them.
2. What Rillwork is
Rillwork is a browser app for editing, running and reporting stormwater and sewer models. It uses the EPA Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) 5.2.4 engine, compiled to WebAssembly, without changes to the engine. EPA SWMM is public-domain software from the US Environmental Protection Agency. Rillwork is not made, endorsed or supported by the EPA.
3. The beta is free, and it is a beta
- During the public beta, Rillwork is free. No account, card or payment details are needed.
- It is unfinished software. Features may change, break or be removed, and the beta may end, with or without notice.
- We plan to offer a paid licence after the beta, currently expected at $490 per user per year. That price is a plan, not an offer. Paid use will need you to accept separate terms and the end-user licence (EULA.md) at the time. Nothing you do in the beta commits you to paying.
- We will give at least 30 days' notice on the website, and by email to people on the beta list, before the free beta ends.
4. Your models stay on your computer
The app runs entirely in your browser. Your .inp files, data files and results are read and written on your own device. They are not uploaded to us. We have no copy of your models, and we cannot recover them for you. Keep your own backups.
Some optional features contact third parties, but only when you turn them on (see PRIVACY.md):
- the NOAA rainfall lookup;
- map background tiles from OpenFreeMap.
5. Your responsibilities as an engineer
Rillwork is a tool. It does not replace engineering judgment. You are responsible for:
- checking every input and result;
- confirming that the methods and engine suit your project and jurisdiction;
- sealing or signing your own work where the law requires it.
See ENGINEERING-DISCLAIMER.md, which is part of these terms.
6. Acceptable use
Do not:
- use the Service to break the law or anyone's rights;
- try to disrupt the website or hosting, overload them, or get around their security;
- put Rillwork's name or materials in the way of passing off your own product as ours, or ours as yours;
- remove copyright, licence or engine-version notices from the app or its reports.
7. Intellectual property
- Your models and reports are yours. We claim no rights in them.
- Rillwork's own code, design and text belong to Jake Cadwell or his licensors. EULA.md says how you may use the app.
- EPA SWMM stays public domain. Its use in Rillwork does not change that. Third-party components keep their own licences, which are listed in the app's licence notice.
- Names of other products (for example Civil 3D, SewerGEMS and CivilStorm) belong to their owners and appear only to describe file compatibility.
8. Feedback
If you send us suggestions, sample files or bug reports, you allow us to use them to improve Rillwork, with no obligation to you.
We will not publish a model you send us, or share it outside the people working on Rillwork, without your written permission. Delete client-confidential data before sending a sample, or ask us first. See PRIVACY.md.
9. No warranty
The Service is provided "as is" and "as available", with no warranty of any kind, express or implied. This includes merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy and non-infringement. We do not promise that it will be error-free, uninterrupted, or that its results are correct. The beta is free, and you use it at your own risk.
10. Limit of liability
To the fullest extent the law allows:
- we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive loss. This includes loss of profits, data, business or reputation, and the cost of redesign or construction, even if we were told such loss was possible.
- our total liability for anything to do with the free beta is limited to USD 100.
Some places do not allow some of these limits. In those places, they apply only as far as the law allows.
11. Ending your use
You can stop using Rillwork at any time. To leave the beta list, use the unsubscribe link in any email, or write to hello@rillwork.com.
We may suspend or end access to the Service, for example to end the beta. Sections 5, 7, 9, 10 and 12 continue after your use ends.
12. Law and disputes
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Nevada. Disputes go to the state or federal courts in Nevada, unless the law where you live gives you another right.
13. Changes
We may update these terms. The "Last updated" date will change. If a change is significant, we will say so on the website and email the beta list. Continuing to use the Service after a change means you accept it.
